Something unique just happened in Dallas. A woman who had received a transplanted uterus delivered a baby. It is the first time this happens in the United States. The mother gave birth to a baby boy, but the family asked that their name, hometown and the date of the birth are not made public. This information was given to us by Julie Smith, a spokeswoman for the hospital.

“It was a very exciting birth. I’ve seen so many births and delivered so many babies, but this was a very special one,” declared Dr. Liza Johannesson, a uterus transplant surgeon from Sweden.

The woman was born without a uterus, and she received a transplant last year. The transplant came from a living donor and the surgery took place at the Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. Now she managed to become the first woman in the US that gives birth after receiving a uterus.

There have been other eight transplants at Baylor, but four of them failed. Three were successful, and one of the patients is already pregnant.

“We had a very rough start, and then hit the right path. Who paid for it in a certain way were the first three women. I feel very thankful for their contribution, more so than I can express,” Dr. Giuliano Testa declared.

Other babies have been born in Sweden

So far, all the other babies born to women with uterus transplants were born Sahlgrenska University Hospital in Gothenburg, Sweden. These transplants are meant to be temporary, and they should be removed after a woman gives birth to one or two children.

After the US birth, there’s a chance that this medical procedure will become more wll-known. “To make the field grow and expand and have the procedure come out to more women, it has to be reproduced,” Dr. Johannesson said.
