A very rare and weird set of events can be observed on January 31st from Australia, Asia, and North America. More specifically, a total lunar eclipse will happen exactly when a ‘blue moon’ and a ‘supermoon’ occur.
This phenomenon is called by some a Super Blue Blood Moon.
Many people consider the Supermoon phenomenon is a special thing and are overwhelmed by such an event. And how to not be considering it something special when hundreds of sites are promoting this ‘Astronomy 101’ event as something of huge importance for the humankind. And they do that year after year for several times because, yes, this phenomenon occurs that often.
A Supermoon happens when its closest to the Earth. The theory behind this phenomenon is real simple. The Moon has an elliptical orbit on which revolves around the Earth, therefore, for 3 to 4 times a year it reaches to the closest point to Earth, or at perigee.
The Blue Moon
A Blue Moon doesn’t mean the Moon will turn blue. The term Blue Moon refers to the phenomenon of having to full moons in a single month.
On January 1st, a full moon has been observed and because a 2nd full moon will occur on January 31st it will be called a Blue Moon.
The Blood Moon
The Blood Moon refers to the red color of the Moon that it gets during a total lunar eclipse.
The phenomenon is not of a Biblical nature as many mistakenly think. A Blood Moon occurs when the gas molecules from the Earth’s atmosphere are reflecting the blue wavelengths from the sunlight but are totally penetrated by the red light wavelengths which illuminated the Moon in a reddish color.
The ‘Super Blue Blood Moon Eclipse’ and the search for alien life
A total lunar eclipse is a perfect moment for some scientific research. Lately, however, scientists found that a lunar eclipse may help them understand how to search for exoplanets.
The theory is based on the idea that, during a lunar eclipse, the light reflected by the moon back through the planet’s atmosphere and gets impregnated with the characteristics of the planet such as oxygen, ozone, or methane levels.
In conclusion, by studying far-distant total lunar eclipses scientists can find Earth-like planets and so, alien life. However, in the meantime, the researchers are still studying the procedure on our planet during lunar eclipses.
