Twitter is known for a very strict policy when it comes to eliminating undesired content. The social media platform is now banning ads that contradict science on climate change, as Tampa Bay Times reveals.

There’s no denying that climate change represents one of the biggest problems in our world, and scientists are continuously trying to overcome it. Climate change can lead to disastrous outcomes for the environment.

Users might still be able to post freely

There’s no indication, at least for now, that Twitter’s move would affect what users post on the platform. In other words, users might still be able to contradict the science on climate change if, for some reason, they choose to do so.

Twitter wrote in a recent blog post:

We believe that climate denialism shouldn’t be monetized on Twitter, and that misrepresentative ads shouldn’t detract from important conversations about the climate crisis,

We recognize that misleading information about climate change can undermine efforts to protect the planet.

It’s nice to see that Twitter’s announcement came at the same time as Earth Day, meaning the annual event that’s being held to show support for environmental protection. The first Earth Day event was held over 50 years ago. As for the present, the event includes a wide range of other global events that involve the participation of roughly 1 billion people from almost 200 countries.

Although Twitter’s move seems to only be towards ads, users who are skeptical about climate change science still need to be extra careful. The social network aims to bring new info in a few months regarding how it will provide “reliable, authoritative context” to conversations of its users about climate change.

Climate change has caused the warmest temperatures on Earth in the last seven years, according to EarthDay.org. This should indeed concern us all!
