The recent earthquake that struck the region of Turkey and Syria has left a lasting impact, and a toll on human life that is both staggering and heartbreaking, and CNN brings details. According to Turkish authorities, the death toll in Turkey alone has reached an alarming number of 17,406, with an additional 70,347 individuals reported as injured.

Meanwhile, in Syria, the situation is not much different, with the number of lives lost reaching 3,377, a figure that encompasses both rebel-held and government-controlled areas. The White Helmets civil defense group reported that 2,030 of these fatalities occurred in rebel-held regions in the northwest, while Syrian state media reported 1,347 deaths in government-controlled areas. These sobering numbers serve as a reminder of the devastating power of natural disasters and the crucial need for preparedness and support in the aftermath

The World Health Organization (WHO) is trying to give a helping hand to those affected by the earthquake, which is good news. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General, stated in a recent tweet:

On my way to #Syria, where @WHO is supporting essential health care in the areas affected by the recent earthquake, building on our long-standing work across the country.

The Richter Scale is a widely used measure of earthquake magnitude, and it categorizes earthquakes based on the amount of energy released. Earthquakes with magnitudes of 7.8 and 7.6, such as those that make the subject of this article, are considered “major” earthquakes and fall within a high range on the Richter Scale. Such earthquakes have the potential to cause extensive destruction and result in significant loss of life. They can result in significant ground shaking, damage to buildings, and even trigger tsunamis. These earthquakes are relatively rare but can have a significant impact on the affected communities, making it crucial for people to be prepared and take proper safety measures in the event of a major earthquake.
