Time Travel is Possible, Physicist Claims After Applying Math

Will science ever make it possible for us to travel in time to see our great-grandparents when they were children or our future offspring? Will it ever be possible for someone to see what great events will occur on Earth after a few hundred or even thousands of years? We have always been asking ourselves those kinds of questions, which is why we’ve all seen such scenarios applied in numerous sci-fi movies over time.

In theory, it might be possible to travel in time, and that’s clearly not something that physicists figured out recently. Albert Einstein suspected about a century ago the possibility of traveling in time through his theory of general relativity. It’s just that if time travel happens by the known formulas, a few paradoxes will occur. For instance, if someone travels back in time to ruin the moment when his parents fell in love with each other, how was he able to be conceived in the first place to travel in time? That’s just one of numerous examples that can be given, and it’s not mandatory to be the reincarnation of Albert Einstein to figure out more for yourself. 

Paradoxes aren’t mandatory to occur

Thanks to a study published in Classical and Quantum Gravity, which had Germain Tobar, a physics student at the University of Queensland, as the author, it seems that it is possible to travel in time while avoiding any paradoxes.

Surprisingly enough, nature itself could adapt in order for paradoxes to be avoided. 

Tobar explained:

Classical dynamics says if you know the state of a system at a particular time, this can tell us the entire history of the system,

This has a wide range of applications, from allowing us to send rockets to other planets and modelling how fluids flow.

The student also explained, as the same source quotes:

However, Einstein’s theory of general relativity predicts the existence of time loops or time travel – where an event can be both in the past and future of itself – theoretically turning the study of dynamics on its head.

Surpassing the speed of light would be another way

According to previous studies, including conclusions coming from the great Albert Einstein himself, it would be possible to travel back in time if a person somehow exceeded the speed of light. That’s because time slows down for an object as it travels close to the speed of light. If a person travels at the speed of light, even for a few minutes, he would see all his friends and relatives decades older when he comes back to Earth. That’s how much time slows down if somebody travels at the speed of light. And you could consider that, in a more technical way, that’s time traveling to the future. The difference is that if anybody ever does it, it wouldn’t be the kind of time travel that would instantly teleport you to a different point in time. Instead, it would work by making time a lot slower for you and running normally for everybody else.

On the other hand, even though Einstein said that the speed of light is the maximum allowed speed by the laws of physics, he could be wrong. What’s for sure is that the speed of light is always constant compared to any other speed in the Universe. That’s another conundrum that scientists hope to untangle: why is the speed of light constant all the time?

At this point, nobody has ever surpassed the speed of light or traveled in time as far as we know.
