Many people worldwide know about the first picture ever taken of a black hole. As this goal has been achieved and there is always more room for improvement, scientists, to be capable of testing the Theory of General Relativity that Einstein developed, need to come up with a way of taking pictures of black holes that look better. They need about three satellites that would be in search of black holes.
What invention have they been working on?
According to Freek Roelofs, the lead author of the article that came up with the idea, who is also a Ph.D. candidate at Radboud University, the first photo of a black hole has been captured by Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), but having satellites to do that would provide better access to what black holes in the Universe has to hide.
“In space, you can make observations at higher radio frequencies, because from Earth these are filtered out by the atmosphere,” Roelofs says.
Furthermore, space is way too far away from the telescope so it would help scientists do better in this case. The EHT takes pictures with more than five times worse resolution than what a satellite could do.
How would satellites facilitate the black holes research?
The existence of black holes has not been proved for the first time by that photo, but by radio satellites and as scientists are looking forward to getting a better look at them, satellites should do the trick. There could be cosmic repercussions no matter how tiny an unexpected discovery could be.
“The fact that the satellites are moving around the Earth makes for considerable advantages,” Radio Astronomy Professor Heino Falcke says in the statement.
Thanks to the satellites the black holes can no longer hide their secrets from the experts as they could be seen in detail. In case there are some deviations from the Einsteinian theory, they should not go unnoticed.
