NASA is preparing to send humans to the Moon once again after more than half a century. If everything goes well, it will be possible by 2025 via the Artemis mission. But until that glorious moment, sending robots to explore the lunar soil remains a great option.
NASA reveals on its official website that it’s looking for students who can design robots able to dig on the Moon.
The Lunabotics Junior Contest starts
As a result of NASA’s initiative, the Lunabotics Junior Contest becomes available for K-12 students from public and private schools in the US and even for home-schoolers.
The challenge is not easy at all. NASA wants a person to invent a robot that can dig and move lunar soil from the South Pole of the Moon to a holding container located where Artemis astronauts could explore.
Mike Kincaid, who is NASA’s associate administrator at the Office of STEM Engagement, declared as quoted on the space agency’s website:
Extracting resources in deep space will require innovation and creativity, and students are some of the most creative thinkers,
The next generation always brings new perspectives, inventive ideas, and a sense of optimism to the challenges NASA puts in front of them. I’m really looking forward to seeing the designs they submit to Lunabotics Junior.
Along with the upcoming Artemis mission, NASA aims to build a base on the Moon. If everything goes on well, the next step will be to send the first humans to Mars. It would be a major achievement for science, as the Red Planet shows some signs of being at least theoretically capable of hosting life forms.
As for building a human base on Mars, we all have to be realistic and admit that such an achievement can only be feasible for the far future.
