NASA Opportunity Rover’s Legacy – A Stunning Panorama of Mars

The NASA’s Opportunity rover died on the Red Planet due to a massive Martian dust storm. However, before the dust storm covered the skies above Opportunity, the robot managed to capture hundreds of images. NASA shared the Opportunity Rover’s legacy as a stunning Panorama of Mars.

More than 350 images were mashed together into one 360-degree photo. Those pics were snapped with the Panoramic Camera (Pancam) of the Opportunity rover throughout about one month. From the last picture taken by the vehicle, we can see that Opportunity latest moments were spent in Perseverance Valley located in Endurance Crater’s western rim. After the rover reported to NASA that a storm is approaching, it lost touch with the Eart in June because its solar panels got covered in rocks and dust.

After that, over the next months, the US space agency tried to contact the Opportunity rover. On the 13th of February this year, NASA had no choice but to admit that Opportunity’s mission is over.

Stunning Panorama of Mars Is The NASA Opportunity Rover’s Legacy

The images that make the stunning panorama of Mars (see below) were captured in different wavelengths, such as violet, green, and near-infrared, all of them helping to compose the 360-degree picture. Because the Pancam did not have enough time, some photos were black and white. The dust storm hit before the rover could be able to do otherwise.

The mission of the Opportunity rover launched in 2004, and it was supposed to last for no longer than 90 days, which means that the little rover served NASA over a decade longer than planned. The magnificent panorama is not only interesting to look at, but is also a source of data about the red planet.
