Being an archeologist can be one of the most exciting jobs. You have the opportunity to find proofs of lost civilizations and worlds that now are studied in History classes. Results of your work are admired in the entire world, in museums or in other places that can be considered a learning environment. Some discoveries are memorable and the ones who find them have the chance to be remembered for a very long time.

Let’s find out more about this amazing discovery

One of those unforgettable discoveries was made by a group of archeologists who were exploring a site in Mexico. This place has been found recently and, according to studies, is the largest underwater cave in the world. A huge place like this is the perfect site for impressing findings like giant sloths fossils and some primitive objects dedicated to worshiping the Mayan God of commerce.

The animal fossils were found next to artifacts coming from human activities: ceramics, household items, jewelry and more. This is not a coincidence because this cave is actually a network of joint underwater refugees. Here, people and animals found their water supplies, especially in drought times, so they lived here together even if their existence was sometimes threatened by the fluctuating water level. This fluctuation contributed to the extinction of some species, as well as cave people; some of those who found a home in these caves lost their lives because of floods.

Now, their remains will help scientists show modern people some bits of their lifestyle, the fascinating history of caves and answer some questions about ancient times like Pleistocene. Although they were considered to be primitive, cave people had their own ways for making a living and they were the ones who discovered things used even today, including cult objects. The Mayans, like any other lost civilization in the world, still captivate modern people and scientists want to learn as much as possible about their way of life.
