Artificial Intelligence is there once again, laughing in our faces and proving that it’s capable of things that most of us didn’t even dare to imagine in the past! If you’ve always thought that many actors look way too young for their age on screen, welcome to the club! The American multinational mass media and entertainment conglomerate well-known as Disney has managed to develop a movie quality AI tool that can automatically alter the age of actors while they perform.

No, Artificial Intelligence cannot properly make us younger or older, or at least not yet. Disney’s new toy can just create the illusion that the actors from a movie have a different age than they actually have. Gizmodo brings the news regarding the new AI system. Still, the software tool is better than make-up and less expensive than visual effects.

Disney Research Studios made the magic happen

Disney Research Studios is responsible for creating the incredible new AI tool that can alter the age of a person while acting.

It’s not even mandatory for the actor to look directly at the camera in order to have his physiognomy look younger or older. The researchers first created a database of thousands of synthetic faces that were generated randomly. Machine learning aging tools were then used by the researchers to alter the age of the test subjects. A new neural network called FRAN (face re-aging network) has exploited the results.

Arnold Schwarzenegger: too old to play the Terminator again?

To the surprise of many, Arnold Schwarzenegger, one of the most influential and famous actors in action movies ever, has been in the cast for the latest Terminator movie once again. That movie was called ‘Terminator: Dark Fate,’ and it came out in 2019. It was generally received well by the public, and it had 1 win and 12 nominations when it came to the awards. Many were expecting to see a different actor in the main role, as happened in the ‘Terminator: Salvation’ movie from 2009, when Christian Bale took the lead.

The million-dollar question now arises: can the new AI system make Arnold Schwarzenegger young again? We’ll likely find out for sure pretty soon, although we have strong reasons to be optimistic. Surely many will be asking the same question regarding other legendary actors from action movies.

Perhaps from now on, we’ll see once again actors such as Jean Claude Van-Damme, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis or Mel Gibson looking young again and delighting us as they did so many times in action movies back in the ’80s, ’90s, etc. But of course, the actors themselves need to give their approval to have their facial features redesigned, which could be a problem. Only time will tell for sure how much the new AI system will be applied, but what’s for sure is that technology is evolving at a staggering and almost frightening pace. And another certain fact is that it’s worth waiting to find out if the top actors who delighted the childhood of many of us will have their faces look younger by the new AI system. Stay tuned to find out!
