China’s impressive Chang’e 5 moon mission will perform a smooth landing on the Moon’s surface to collect lunar soil samples, Science and Technology Daily reports. The probe is China’s 5th robotic mission set to take off to the Moon, and it is tasked to land near Mons Rümker, a mountain located near a vast basaltic lunar plain dubbed ‘Oceanus Porcellarum.’

Chang’e 5’s mission is to bring back to Earth samples from the lunar surface. This will be the first new material from our planet’s natural satellite in more than forty years. Researchers are eager to receive new samples, which will join the fabric took by Apollo astronauts and Soviet rovers. The new samples are expected to help answer a few questions about the origins and development of the Moon and also of the Earth.

Ouyang Ziyuan, chief scientist of China’s lunar exploration plan recently stated at the Software-Defined Satellite Forum in Rizhao, eastern Chinese Sandong Province that the main technological issues the probe has had, have been resolved.

Chang’e 5 moon mission would launch in late-2019, and would eventually return home with lunar soil samples

The Chinese Chang’e 5 moon mission is scheduled to take care of four major tasks. These include soil sampling, taking off from the Moon, performing an uncrewed landing, and safely return to Earth. The artificial intelligence technology that was used in performing the soft landing of the previous sent rovers, Chang’e 3 and Chang’e 4 is expected to help with the Chang’e 5’s landing as well.

Ouyang Ziyuan said that Chang’e 5 would be launched by the most recently designed carrier rocket at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in south China’s Hainan Province. The rover will sport an overall cargo of approximately 8.2 tones.

China intends to send astronauts to the Moon and later build a lunar base. Asia’s giant has already launched numerous satellites and rovers in the space. The Chang’e 5 moon mission is scheduled to take off to space at the end of the year 2019.
