What to Look Out for and the Benefits of a Memory Foam Mattress

When on the lookout for a memory foam mattress, you need to take a look at yourself and how you are as a sleeper. What positions are you used to? Do you have any health related requirements that need to be met? What problems have you run into with your previous mattress? We have a few pointers on hand regarding what to look out for and the benefits of a memory foam mattress.

Back Support

Memory foam is the best for providing full lumbar support and retaining spine alignment. So the health of your back may dictate the type of mattress you get. You need to make sure that your chosen mattress is firm. If you suffer from chronic back pain on top of your sleeping preferences, these are the preferences for you to consider;

  • Back sleeper – A mattress with a medium density offers up some appropriate middle ground, firm enough to support your lower back, but also soft enough to match your body’s outline when sleeping.
  • Stomach sleeper – Due to the flexible nature of the memory foam mattress, a more solid density is required to keep your full body afloat, especially if the need to sleep on your stomach is brought about by back pain.
  • Side sleeper – A soft mattress with a low density would provide good support to your shoulders and hips.


Allergies have a way of creeping up on us at the most unexpected of times, and sometimes, mattresses can play a part in that.

  • Dust mites – Dust mites are among the biggest causes of indoor allergies, and can easily fester up to 10 million inside a traditional coil spring mattress, but this can lead to the development of dust mite feces which will set off your allergies.
  • Pet dander – Pet dander is tiny microscopic flecks of skin shed by household pets. Like dust mites, this can settle into the mattress and hinder the quality, the inevitable consequence of letting your pet climb all over your bed. The problem is exacerbated if you have a pet that has been bounding around outdoors and is bringing in all the outside elements such as pollen.

Memory foam mattresses are designed to be hypoallergenic, made from a much denser quality that leaves fewer openings than a spring mattress. This density can fight off dust mites, pet dander and other indoor allergies, reducing the risk of sleep interrupted by allergies considerably.

Memory Foam Pillows

While a mattress can work wonders on your back and fighting off allergies, memory foam pillows complete the sleeping experience. They are typically made from a cooler material so heating becomes less of an issue. Also, if you suffer from breathing problems during the night such as sleep apnea, the memory foam material will counter it.


Another benefit we don’t always think about until we’re in the moment is sound. Innerspring mattresses can squeak when you move about and disturb your sleep. But when you move about on a memory foam mattress, very little sound resonates, reducing the risk of a disturbed sleep.

So, in addition to getting a good night’s sleep, a memory foam mattress also has the benefit of supporting your health as well, countering those common ailments and alleviating them.
