More and more people begin to have vision problems that, most of the time, lead to blindness. After scientists analyzed the data they came to an incredible result. It appears that by 2050 this illness will have increased from 36 million to 115 million. Quite frightening, right? Even scarier are the numbers of the people suffering from vision impairment (not corrected by external factors like glasses or contacts).
Researchers say that there are approximately over 215 millions of people suffering from all kinds of visual impairment, but by 2050 the number will be horrifying. More specifically, we’re talking about 588 million.
In the The Lancet Global Health, a medical journal which treats worldwide health issues, it is stated that most of the people who suffer from visual impairment live in Asia and Africa. However, when researchers examined the data collected from 188 countries from the period of time between 1990 and 2015 they found out that there is a decrease in the rate of the visual impairment. They think that the decrease occurred due to the evolution of technology and science. For example cataract surgery isn’t even considered difficult anymore.
Most of the people who suffer from visual impairment are over 50. Starting with this age many functions in the human body tend to degenerate and this is why so many health issues appear.
Rupert Bourne, a study author of visual impairment issue and a professor at Anglia Ruskin University, thinks that some measures have to be taken. It’s up to them, scientists and doctors, to find suitable treatments for the different kinds of visual impairments people suffer from. It doesn’t matter if it is only a mild impairment, because once untreated and ignores, it can always become a severe issue. Making efforts to find and provide the right treatment has always been the best way to deal with the problem.
