Hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ or HCT), a diuretic medication, is used to treat swelling due to fluid build up and it is also often used to treat high blood pressure. This medication is also used for renal tubular acidosis, diabetes insipidus, and to decrease the risk of kidney stones in those who have high calcium levels in the urine. HCTZ is a first-line treatment for high blood pressure, even though other substances are more effective. This pill can also be taken in combination with others to increase the effectiveness.

Adverse effects

Low blood levels of potassium or Hypokalemia are an occasional side effect. Potassium supplements can usually prevent this or by combining hydrochlorothiazide with a potassium-sparing diuretic.

Other such disturbances in the levels of serum electrolytes include hyponatremia (low sodium), hypomagnesemia (low magnesium),  and hypercalcemia (high calcium). Hyperglycemia, high blood sugar, Hyperuricemia, high levels of uric acid in the blood, Headache, Hyperlipidemia, high cholesterol and triglycerides, Weight gain, Nausea/vomiting, Gout, Photosensitivity, and Pancreatitis.

If the dose administered is higher than 25 mg per day the side effects increase.

However, aside from these side effects, you can also get cancer. These are some blood pressure medication that you need to watch out for as you do not know whether they are pure or not.

One lot of Irbesartan and seven lots of its H-C-T-Z tablets are being recalled by Pristing Pharmaceuticals after they have realized that inside of the pills there are unacceptable carcinogen levels that could cause cancer.

Solco Healthcare was distributing the drugs, according to FDA, Food and Drug Administration.

If you were advised to take these pills, you should contact your doctor and make sure that they change them with a substitute that does not cause cancer.
