Sony will soon release an update for PlayStation 4 and among the new features, there will also be some tools for managing play time, there will be some custom wallpapers and improvements for the library.

PlayStation 4 has reached 5.50 beta and it includes a supersampling mode on the PS4 Pro that will allow players that have HDTVs – 1080p or below – to ‘enjoy an enhanced visual experience when playing some PS4 games’.

If you have signed up for the beta program, you should soon get the latest beta system software.

Sony said about the supersampling mode that some games will render at a higher resolution that will get rescaled to match the HDTV. Even if you don’t own a 4K TV, the boost of image clarity will be clearly visible.

The supersampling feature is already available on Xbox One X.

PlayStation 4 New Features

Looking at the previously mentioned features, it’s important to add some light on the ‘Play Time Management’ option. It’s great for parents to set some limits for their children. They can go to Settings, Family Management and set a game time, add to it or cut some of the time. They will be able to change the setting by signing into the PlayStation Network account through a web browser from a smartphone or a PC. From there, you can also set the PS4 to log out when the play session has ended.

There will also be pop-up notifications showing that the child is now playing and how much time the session lasted so far.

Custom wallpapers will be easily added to a PS4 through a USB stick. You can also upload to it different backgrounds and customize the Tournaments team page with the background or with a team logo.

A new tab will also be added on the console: ‘This PS4’. It will list all the apps installed on your PS4. Another tab, the ‘PS Plus’ will only show you the free games from the PS Plus Monthly Free Games. You can find these new tabs in the Library section.

There are several more additions and enhancements to the system too. So far, Sony hasn’t announced when we’re going to expect the public release of the 5.50 system software update.
