Neil deGrasse Tyson is not only a respected celebrity in the science world but also a famous author. This is why the last week ‘statement he made, regarding the marijuana problem, was unexpected and even shocked some people. But the astrophysicist has actually a very rational and objective point because even Chuck Nice, the co-host, and many others said that Tyson’s statement is entirely rational and they agree with the astrophysicist’s opinion.

Neil deGrasse Tyson claimed that he doesn’t understand why marijuana is illegal in The United States. More specifically, he doesn’t understand why is that while the alcohol can do much worse to the people who use it in large quantities.

On one of Tyson’s recent TV appearances at a StarTalk Radio Q&A session, he talked with Chuck Nice, the co-host about this issue, among others (for example his new study, “Astrophysics For People In A Hurry”). Asked by Tom Angell if he agrees with Carl Sagan’s opinion on marijuana and its legality, Tyson stated that it shouldn’t have been made illegal, given the fact that in comparison with some other legal substances like alcohol, marijuana isn’t harmful. This is actually the second time the astrophysicist talked about this issue.

One of the first astrophysicists to have ever had something to say about legalizing marijuana is Carl Sagan, who was famous for his “Cosmos” TV series. He wrote an anonymous study named “Marihuana Reconsidered” where he stated that people were almost deprived of a right when marijuana became illegal on the United States territory. Sagan strongly believed in the power of marijuana and he also thought that the use of this substance would be very benefic for the mad world we’re living in these days.

It is indeed benefic, and some states began recognizing it. This is why medical marijuana is now being sold on some territories of the United States.
