Living with chronic back pain is a daily challenge for a large number of Americans. At its worst, such pain can be debilitating. Even if yours is more of a nagging pain, it is still something that inhibits your from achieving the feeling of overall physical wellness. This is without mentioning the fact that living with chronic pain of any kind can take its toll on your metal state as well.

Even though chronic back pain sufferers should always seek the guidance of a qualified healthcare professional, there are a number of things that you can do at home in order to safely try to alleviate some of that pain. Here are a few tips to consider doing if you, like so many others, experience chronic back pain on a regular basis.

Change Your Mattress

When you consider the fact that you spend around eight hours asleep each night, it should come as no surprise that the mattress you sleep on can either be your best friend or your worst enemy in regards to your chronic back pain. During a good night’s sleep, your body is able to repair your joints and muscles more effectively, leading to a looser, less painful back in the morning.

Firstly, if it has been over eight years since you purchased a new mattress, then it is time to make a change. However, if the one you have just simply isn’t giving you the right balance of support and comfort, then you should look into other options.

Purchasing a new mattress is not the cheapest thing that you will do to help your back pain, but it might prove to be the most helpful. Moreover, there are options available if you are looking to finance your furniture. In doing so you can provide yourself with a better night’s sleep and, potentially, some relief from your back pain.

Stay Active

During your waking hours, it is important for you to stay moving if you have chronic back pain. This, of course, only applies to your situation if the source of your pain isn’t an injury that a physician has advised you to rest. Otherwise, though, chronic back pain sufferers are encouraged to stay active and keep moving.

Once upon a time, it was common practice for doctors to tell patients with back pain to lie down as much as possible and stay off their feet. It is now known, though, that doing so can increase your pain instead of relieving it. When you lie down for extended periods, your muscles stiffen up.

Moreover, exercising regularly allows other muscles, such as your abdominals, to become stronger. This will take some of the load off of your spine which can in turn help relieve your back pain. While you certainly shouldn’t be doing any heavy lifting or running any marathons, light physical activity on a daily basis can help strengthen your body and keep the muscles in your back loose.
