For most people choosing a new dentist isn’t as easy as simply looking online for a practice with space for new patients, as most of us want a dentist who is both talented and experienced, but also kind and understanding. After all, regular visits to the dentist may be essential for both your physical health and confidence, but it’s not exactly the most fun activity in your diary, right?

So if you are looking for a good and reliable dentist in Oak Lawn, Chicago it’s really worth taking the time to find the right person for you and your family; then you will be set up for both routine checks and (hopefully infrequent) dental emergencies. Here are a few ideas to guide you in your search.

Ask around

Personal recommendations from people you know and trust are always useful, but in this case make sure the people you ask live in the same area as you, to save wasting time being told about great dentists who are based five towns away! If names are suggested ask the person recommending them what it is they like about the dentist. This should reveal if their priorities and ‘must-haves’ match yours.

Drive around

You can find a town map with all local dental practices marked out easily enough on Google Maps, so all you need to do then is drive around and gather some important information. Look at things such as:

  •         The distance to the dental office from your home or work. Is it close enough to be convenient? Is the route likely to be jammed in busy times?
  •         What kind of impression do you get from the outside of the office? It should be well maintained and litter free. Caring about the first impression visitors get says a lot of good things about a dental practice.

Call a few likely candidates

Once you have narrowed down your search to a few promising options it’s time to check out a few things. You will probably need to call them to find out things like their office hours, if they are in the correct dental network for your dental benefits (if relevant), if you share a first language with both the dentist and staff (or can communicate comfortably otherwise), and whether or not the dentist is a member of the ADA. (You can do all this in an in-person visit while checking places out if you prefer.)

Check their reviews

These may be testimonials left on a dentists’ dedicated website, or on review sites and social media platforms. It’s best to read a variety of reviews to help build a wider picture than would be possible from just a handful. Discount random bad reviews or negative comments, but always watch for any themes which emerge around the same kind of issue, as that could be a red flag.

There are lots of great, reliable, dentists in Oak Lawn, Chicago; you just need to take the time to find the person who is ideal for you.
