Each person needs a certain amount of sleep, depending on their body’s needs. It is well known that during sleep the body recovers from the deterioration it suffers after a day and it also gets ready for another full day.

Usually, the average amount of sleep is 8 hours. The specialists advise between seven and ten hours of sleep every night. But there are some people, especially the elders, who can have a good night’s sleep with less than that, such as five hours.

There are celebrities that disclosed the fact that they sleep very little. Such an example is Elon Musk, SpaceX’s CEO, which is a self-declared alcoholic and has long periods of time in which sleeps four hours a night. This happens when he has deadlines to meet on his projects.

How Many Hours Should We Sleep Each Night?

Scientists did numerous studies on this topic and came to the conclusion that less than 8 hours of sleep per night can prolong our lives. Many people side with this theory and get only 6.5 hours of sleep. This theory was the conclusion of a study that was conducted 15 years ago that correlated the term ‘enough sleep’ to be between 5 and 8 hours every night, which means 6.5 hours on average. But this was not the first theory to tackle with how much a person should sleep.

A team of researchers conducted a study between 1995 and 1999 that wanted to find out if mortality is correlated with mortality. The results showed that people lived longer if they slept less. Among the women that participated in the study, the ones that slept between 5 to 6.5 hours each night were more likely to survive a long time. But the ones that slept less than 5 hours or more than 6.5 hours were less likely to live longer.

Therefore, the best amount of sleep anyone can have to have a better chance to survive is between 5 and 6.5 hours every night.
