Dental experts are concerned that more and more people are using fluoride-free toothpaste which might not be sufficient to protect against cavities. According to specialists, fluoride is one of the most critical ingredients in toothpaste that can stop cavities development.

While the majority of toothpaste products already contain fluoride, many new products deemed as “natural” and healthier simply because they are fluoride-free. However, the experts are worried about this new trend.

“It’s really important to debunk this idea that brushing your teeth stops decay. You need to have the fluoride,” explained Damien Walmsley, a researcher at the British Dental Association and a dentistry professor at the University of Birmingham.

Also, an article published by the Gerodontology journal reviewed the scientific literature regarding cavities and concluded that without containing fluoride, toothpaste is useless against cavities.

Thus, the idea that cavities can be avoided by just brushing the teeth is wrong, according to the dental health experts.

Fluoride-free toothpaste is not enough to protect against cavities

Even though the dentists’ community commonly accepts that fluoride helps stop cavities from developing, some experts think that the simple removal of the dental plaque of the teeth is as beneficial as fluoride.

However, the recent review study in this direction revealed that only three previous researches were of a high-quality. Accordingly, these three studies have been carried out in the US and the UK on a total of 743 children aged between 10 and 13.

These studies revealed that brushing and flossing the teeth without fluoride did not influence cavities reduction.

“Despite a large body of scientific evidence, there are growing numbers of consumers who believe that all types of toothpaste are the same and that as long as you clean your teeth effectively with a toothbrush or other device which cleans in-between the teeth, you can prevent decay,” asserted Dentist J. Leslie Winston from the famous Procter & Gamble company.

In conclusion, the dental health experts warn that fluoride-free toothpaste is not protecting against cavities formation, despite the more and more opinions that state otherwise.
