After its invention in China at the beginning of the century, e-cigs experienced a global boom due to a mixture of curiosity, marketing and lack of regulations and scientific studies. Now, teens seem attracted to this new form of smoking, which they consider cheaper, accessible and safer but, at the same time, more and more teens who use electronic cigarettes are curious to try tobacco smoking.

Even though today there are dozens of studies on e-cigs’ benefits and side effects, the researchers do not agree. While some claim that it is a gateway to tobacco smoking in teens, others defend ‘vaping’ saying is a healthier way of smoking and also a way to quit tobacco.

The latest study in this regard, however, concluded that electronic cigarettes are not too effective to quit smoking but, instead, they prone teenagers to smoking.

“While it is too early to know the long-term effects of electronic cigarettes on health, there is a discovery that has great evidence – the vaping habit among teens is a strong predictor of the later use of tobacco products,” explains a researcher at the University of Michigan, in the US and co-author of the study, Richard Miech.

This study is not the only one conducted recently that found a strong connection between the use of electronic cigarettes among teenagers and the transition to tobacco.

More and more teens using electronic cigarettes are curious to try tobacco smoking, worldwide

Every study started by following teens who had never smoked for at least one year. Among them, those who vaped were three times more likely to experiment regular cigarettes by the end of the year of examination.

The same results were revealed by American, Canadian, and British studies.

Mark Conner is a researcher at the University of Leeds (United Kingdom) who has also studied the possible transition from e-cigs to tobacco smoking among teens.

“Adolescents are attracted to [the electronic cigarette] because of its low price, its availability, diversity of flavors, and the false perception that they are less harmful,” he explains.

In conclusion, all the recent studies, conducted in many countries around the Earth, concluded that more and more teens using electronic cigarettes are curious to try tobacco smoking and, even more, many of them make this transition within a year after started vaping.
