If you’re reading this, you’re probably aware of the health benefits of CBD. It’s pretty well known that CBD eases joint and muscle pain, as well as providing consumers with a good night’s sleep, and helps alleviate stress and anxiety.

So perhaps instead of buying Grandma and Grandpa another baking dish to stuff in their cabinets, it’s time to think of a different gift idea, something they’ll actually love using for their ever growing list of aches and pains.

According to Perry Solomon, M.D., physician and former chief medical officer at HelloMD, an online cannabis education platform “The 65-plus age group is part of the fastest growing demographic that we are seeing when it comes to cannabis utilization. This older crowd seem to be the ones that are most curious, and willing to try, new methods to contribute to their health and wellness.”

According to the Harvard Neurodiscovery Center:

5 million senior citizens suffer from Alzheimer’s

1 million senior citizens suffer from Parkinson’s

300 thousand senior citizens suffer from MS

According to the CDC, 49.6% of senior citizens suffer from Arthritis

With this growing age group suffering from so many conditions, it’s no surprise many in the 65 plus age group are turning to more natural solutions. While this may be news to some, CBD oil for seniors can provide natural relief for over fifty conditions including arthritis, multiple sclerosis (MS), epilepsy, numerous stress-related disorders, and more.

So let’s go through and highlight some major reasons your loved ones could benefit from CBD, shall we?

CBD helps to manage pain

According to CDC.gov, nearly “half of the senior population in the United States suffering from Arthritis and 75–85% of seniors suffering from chronic pain.”

By activating various receptors in the Endocannabinoid System, experts have found that patients treated with CBD experience a “clinically significant reduction” in pain related symptoms with little to no adverse side effects. Researchers think that CBD interacts with a core piece of the ECS — endocannabinoid receptors in your brain and immune system.

Receptors are tiny proteins attached to your cells. They receive signals from different stimuli and help your cells respond. This response creates anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving effects that help with pain management. This means that CBD oil and other products may benefit people with chronic pain.

But as we all know, your grandparents are susceptible to much more than just chronic pain. We all know an older loved one that has taken a fall.

As our bodies age, we endure a condition known as Osteoporosis. During Osteoporosis, our bones become fragile, making them easier to break. Because of this, seniors can experience severe pain and fractures if they have a fall.

According to Americanbonehealth.org, falls are the “number one cause of death for men over the age of 60, and 33% of women and 25% of men older than 50 suffering from osteoporotic fractures.”

In addition to helping with chronic pain, “research has shown that the cannabinoids like CBD can actually help strengthen the bones and even promote the healing process if a fracture does occur,” according to The US National Library of Medicine.

CBD helps Insomnia

While everyone could use a little help sleeping sometimes, insomnia is especially prominent in those with pre-existing conditions, making seniors more at risk. Sleep patterns are also often shifted with seniors common use of prescription medication.

Sleeping pills are only a temporary solution, with multiple negative effects including  diarrhea, dizziness, daytime drowsiness, and dry mouth and throat.

Studies show however CBD helps stress, anxiety, restlessness, and general unbalance in the body. Promoting a healthier sleep problem for seniors, and keeping them away from harmful sleeping pills.

CBD Improves the Heart

According to the American College of Cardiology, “heart disease is the most common condition amongst older adults and the #1 cause of death for this age group.”

Also according to AgingCare.com, “more than half of all American adults suffer from high blood pressure,” high blood pressure being one of the largest causes of heart disease.

In a 2017 study, Nine healthy male volunteers were given 600 mg of CBD or placebo in a randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind, crossover study.

The results?

CBD reduced resting systolic BP and stroke volume , with increased heart rate and maintained cardiac output. Subjects who had taken CBD had lower BP , increased HR (+10 bpm; P < 0.01), decreased stroke volume , and a blunted forearm skin blood flow response to isometric exercise. In response to cold stress, subjects who had taken CBD had blunted BP and increased HR, with lower total peripheral resistance.

The study concludes by saying, “This data shows that acute administration of CBD reduces resting BP and the BP increase to stress in humans, associated with increased HR.”

By reducing blood pressure and inflammation and in the heart, CBD can significantly improve overall heart health.

CBD vs. Prescription Pills for Seniors

If you’ve ever seen a commercial for most medication, then you are probably familiar with the comically long list of side effects that are often listed at the end of the ad. Without a doubt, many pharmaceutical drugs often come with side effects that are worse than the condition they are treating.

According to a Harvard Study, “At its worst, the effects of CBD include minor complications like nausea, fatigue and irritability.”

While CBD won’t necessarily always take the place of prescription drugs, a study conducted with Brightfield Group asked the effectiveness of CBD compared to pharmaceuticals, and the results were eye opening.

“When asked about the effectiveness of CBD compared to pharmaceuticals, approximately 60 percent of respondents said that, to some extent, CBD was more effective than the prescription medications they had tried or used regularly. Another 75 percent of respondents said that CBD was more effective than over-the-counter remedies.”

And yet, people in the 65 plus age group are still prescribed these medications routinely, many with harsh side effects.

In conclusion, your eldery loved ones have a lot on their plate. Between pain of many  forms, insomnia, heart conditions, and more, there’s a lot of issues facing this age group. Many are fed up with prescription pills and their side effects and looking for a more natural, safe solution. So maybe instead of getting them something they don’t need, maybe try getting them something they’ll really love.
