Everybody knows by now that alcohol isn’t good for your health, especially if you abuse those drinks. Sure, it’s tempting to dive in and go with the flow if you’re at someone’s birthday party, for instance, but everything comes at a price in life. You may develop health problems later in life.

According to EatThis,NotThat!, some drinking habits could prematurely age a person, and they don’t necessarily have to be related to alcohol. Here’s the list:

Consuming too much alcohol

Clara Lawson, RDN, explains as quoted by eatthis.com:

Alcohol puts a lot of strain on the body and accelerates the aging process in several ways,

It promotes the release of stress hormones that speeds up the aging process. Besides, alcohol hinders the normal functioning of the digestive system and restricts its ability to absorb vital nutrients including vitamins, minerals, protein, and carbohydrates. This is the reason why heavy drinkers become malnourished and look older than their age.

Sodas becoming a consistent part of our routine

Lawson also explains that the cell aging process can receive a contribution from sodas that are infused with artificial sweeteners. However, we also have to remember that sugars cause low-grade chronic inflammation that can increase the risk of diabetes, obesity, and more.

Drinking too much caffeine

Lawson also explains that the heavy consumption of caffeine will decrease the amount of newly formed collagen in the cells of the skin. Therefore, faster aging will kick in.

Not hydrating the right way

Dehydration can lead to problems such as dizziness, headaches, nausea, and more. The Mayo Clinic recommends we drink an average of 8 glasses of water every day.

Drinking caffeinated and rich in sugar beverages

Energy drinks and sugary coffees aren’t too good for our health.

Dr. Barry Sears explains, as quoted by eatthis.com:

The combination [of caffeine and sugar] can generate excess stimulation of the sympathetic nervous system causing an increase in heart rate, hypertension, and cortisol release.
