A new study shows that Ibuprofen, one of the most commonly used analgesics, can affect the fetal fertility of the fetus if administered by the mother in the first three months of pregnancy. The scientists concluded that the Ibuprofen during pregnancy might cause infertility in unborn babies after examining ovarian tissues samples.

According to the results of the study, it seems that the Ibuprofen reduces fertility, while also shortening the fertility period by bringing early menopause. Even if the pregnant women take Ibuprofen for a short period of time, between 2 and 7 days, its effects are irreversible.

The study has been published in the journal Human Reproduction.

How does the Ibuprofen affect the unborn girls?

The pregnancy period is essential in the production of follicles from which the ovaries are generated.

“Girls are born with a finite number of follicles in the ovary and it defines reproductive capacity as an adult,” explained Séverine Mazaud-Guittot, the lead author of the study.

“A poor initial reserve will result in a shortened reproductive period, early menopause, or infertility,” the researcher added.

Further, the scientists notice that the follicle development in the fetus is not totally done in the first trimester of pregnancy and if the Ibuprofen is only taken once in a while is not as damaging.

On the other hand, if Ibuprofen is taken for periods that exceed 2 consecutive days, the analgesic is significantly reducing the number of ovarian cells and the effects will be irreversible.

Is the Ibuprofen during pregnancy also affecting the unborn boys?

According to the studies in this regard, the Ibuprofen suppresses the production of testicular hormones, including testosterone, which controls primary and secondary sexual characteristics, and lowering of the testicles.

These undesirable effects have been recorded even when the Ibuprofen was has been used as indicated by the producers.

Scientists concluded that, indeed, the Ibuprofen during pregnancy might cause infertility in unborn babies, so it should be replaced with another analgesic.
