When Dave Fletcher, the father of a 23-month-old girl, took a photo of his daughter as she was sleeping in a swing thinking that would be an adorable childhood memory. Unfortunately, just weeks after Dave snapped his baby girl falling asleep in a swing, Mr. Fletcher and his wife Vicky were told their daughter had leukemia.
“It was just an afternoon pop out to the swings. She was swinging away. I turned around, and she had dropped off. She was drowsy and fell asleep, but I didn’t think much of it. I thought it was a cute moment and just took a picture of her, as you do,” said Dave Fletcher.
Now, Dave is warning other parents to pay attention to every detail in their children’s behavior and keep an eye out for the signs of leukemia. “It was only afterward we realized it was all part of the symptoms and what I’d captured was her displaying signs of something more sinister,” Mr. Fletcher added.

Dave Fletcher recalled that his daughter had been tired, had had a few colds or viruses, and had quite a bit of bruising on her legs, “but we put all this down to normal childhood bumps and minor illness.”
Back in January this year, Dave and Vicky Fletcher took their baby girl to a GP after a puzzling rash affected her legs and caused her fever. The girl was diagnosed with leukemia, and since then she has undertaken 570 doses of chemotherapy. Now, she’s receiving maintenance therapy in the doctors’ struggle to stop cancer evolution.
“The type of leukemia she has presents a better chance of recovery than some others. She is young which helps those odds. It makes us more optimistic. She doesn’t have to have so many steroids because of the trial she is on,” Dave Fletcher added.
