Your smile is an insight into who you are as a person and your emotions. It is the weapon of choice when you want to send a flirtatious glance across the bar. It is the easiest way to express your happiness or pleasure and the best way to give someone a glimpse into your personality. Although your smile is an essential tool for communication, many people are hesitant to show it off because of their less than pearly white, pearly whites.

Teeth discolouration is a natural process that occurs over time and can leave you feeling embarrassed or self-conscious. However, that doesn’t mean that you can’t take action to get whiter teeth. There are many ways to prevent further discolouration and get whiter teeth, so let’s take a look at them.

Eat Fruit and Vegetables

We all know that we should be eating our five a day for our health, but did you know that eating more fruit and vegetables is also good for your oral health? Eating raw, crunchy fruits and vegetables is a particularly effective way of preventing tooth discolouration and staining because it can act like a toothbrush by removing plaque from your teeth as you chew.

Although they are not backed up by science, some people believe that eating strawberries and pineapple are effective ways to get whiter teeth. Strawberries contain malic acid that you can mix with baking soda to produce a DIY stain remover. On the other hand, pineapple contains an enzyme called bromelain, which is found in some toothpastes.

Limit Your Sugar Intake

They always say that prevention is the best form of treatment, and that is certainly the case when it comes to dental hygiene and teeth whitening.

Lowering your sugar intake is a great way to keep your teeth whiter and healthier. A high sugar diet facilitates the growth of streptococcus mutans, which is the main type of bacteria responsible for plaque build-up and gingivitis.

Brush and Floss

Although tooth discolouration comes naturally with age, it is mainly due to plaque build-up. Do you know the best way to fight plaque build-up? That’s right; it’s by simply brushing and flossing regularly.

Toothpaste on your toothbrush will gently rub out the less stubborn staining, and the floss will remove any bacteria between the teeth that would eventually produce plaque.

Quit Smoking

Smoking and chewing tobacco are bad for you and your teeth, and it is as simple as that. If you want to keep your teeth looking healthy and avoid that unpleasant discolouration and staining, then cutting tobacco out of your life is essential. The nicotine and tar found in tobacco can turn your teeth yellow in a very short space of time and cause more serious dental problems, like gum disease.

Avoid Certain Drinks

We all know about certain foods and drinks that we should avoid for our health, but what about those that cause teeth staining? Drinks like coffee, red wine and sodas are all major culprits when it comes to staining, but that doesn’t mean you have to cut them out completely.

Where possible, drink beverages that you know can stain your teeth through a straw. This will mean that the liquid comes into as little contact with your teeth as possible. It is also advisable to brush your teeth within 30 minutes of consuming one of these drinks to limit the staining effects on your teeth.

High Calcium Diet

Yellow teeth don’t always signify staining. Some tooth discolouration can occur when the enamel is eroded, and the yellow coloured dentin underneath becomes exposed.

By having a calcium-rich diet that includes foods like cheese, milk and broccoli, you can help protect your teeth and stop any form of enamel erosion.

Teeth Whitening

The most effective way of removing any staining and getting those white teeth you have always wanted is to undergo a teeth whitening procedure. Although there are many “at-home” teeth whitening solutions available, the best way to achieve the results you are looking for is to get professional teeth whitening treatment at a cosmetic dentist.

Dental experts will remove any stubborn stains or brown marks and employ the most effective teeth whitening solutions to gently brighten your teeth and leave you with a smile that can’t be wiped off your face.
