Recently, yet another kid died due to a severe, yet unknown, viral outbreak at a New Jersey rehabilitation center especially designated for “medically fragile children,” raising the death toll to 7, according to the latest report from the institute.

In general, over the last few weeks, there have been about 20 cases of an adenovirus infection at the Wanaque Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Haskell, which is approximately 30 miles northwest of New York, as reported by the Health Department of New York City. The 227-bed, for-profit facility cares for children and elderly residents.

The agency reported yesterday that six children died this month. However, the center also said yesterday that another child had died. The adenoviruses are a typical family of viruses that commonly trigger minor diseases, from cold-like to conjunctivitis. But people with compromised immune systems, especially infants, are at higher risk for contracting severe illnesses.

The strain that infects kids is often linked to respiratory conditions, states the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which, on their website, educates health professionals to notify state or local health agencies about suspect cases. The Department of Health has not disclosed the victims’ names or their ages.

The CDC is currently supplying technical support to the state. Over the past ten years, severe illness and death have been reported due to the type of illness encountered at the establishment in the United States, even though it is unclear how many casualties have occurred.

In short, another kid died due to a severe, yet unknown, viral outbreak affecting a New Jersey center for rehabilitation, explicitly designated for medically fragile children. With this last death, the death toll raised to 7, as reported by the most statistics coming straight from the institute.
