Alzheimer’s Disease is a neurodegenerative condition that is caused by a progressive destruction of brain neurons. A disease that corresponds to the most common type of dementia, Alzheimer’s Disease it accounts for 70% of all cases of dementia and a total of 30 million people are affected throughout the planet. However, specialists have always considered that diet is involved in the protection against neurodegenerative disorders. Thus, according to new studies, Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented and even kept under control by beets extract.

Researchers at the University of South Florida, in Tampa, Florida, in the USA, have discovered that the beet contains a compound, betanin, that is very effective in preventing the beta-amyloid peptides from forming the Alzheimer’s plaques.

According to Li-June Ming, the leading author of this study, the new findings suggest that betanin, a compound extracted from beets, is a very promising inhibitor of some specific chemical reactions that take place in the brain and that are directly involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s disease.

Beets extract can prevent Alzheimer’s disease and can even keep it under control

The beta-amyloid protein fulfills numerous basic functions in the body. The problem is that when they acquire an erroneous structure, these proteins adhere to each other forming fibers that, in turn, will be added in oligomers and beta-amyloid plaques, which are highly toxic to neurons.

Betanin from the beets acts as an inhibitor of some brain chemical reactions involved in the progression of Alzheimer’s. In this context, some studies have suggested that beet juices can increase blood flow to the brain in elderly people and, quite possibly, improve their cognitive functions.

As the authors of the new research suspect, the betanin can block the effects of copper on the beta-amyloid protein, thus preventing its incorrect folding which leads to the formation of Alzheimer’s plaques.

However, Darrell Cole Cerrato, co-author of the research, points out that “we can not say that betanin completely avoids misfolding, but we can say that it reduces oxidation which prevents erroneous folding to a certain level, perhaps to the point of slowing down the aggregation of beta-amyloid peptides”.

In conclusion, Alzheimer’s disease can be prevented and even kept under control with beets extract, more specifically with the betanin compound in beets.
