Recent research unveiled that the consumption of yogurt might be quite important in reducing the risk of colon cancer in me. The study was conducted on a number of 32,606 male and 55,743 female healthcare practitioners who have gone through a colonoscopy between the years 1986 and 2012. Exhaustive information about their style of life and eating habits had to be supplied at four-yearly intervals in order to gather the data.

During that time, have been recorded numerous cases of colorectal adenoma – a curable glandular carcinoma of the colon – around 5,800 in men and over 8,000 in women. Among the males, the ones that did not have the habit of consuming yogurt were 19% more likely to have adenomatous polyps, also known as adenomas of the colon. 26% of those that would eat yogurt were better protected against polyps that could change from benign to malignant and cause colon cancer. A curious element of the study is that no changes have been observed in women.

Co-author of the study, Dr. Yin Cao from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, declares that “the findings if confirmed by future studies, suggest that yogurt might serve as a widely acceptable modifiable factor, which could complement colorectal cancer screening and reduce risk of adenoma among the unscreened.” As some adenomas can take 10-15 years to evolve into cancer, people over 45 are advised to undergo tests in order to prevent health complications.

Former studies had observed the relationship between yogurt and the risk of colon cancer as it is widely known that yogurt is beneficial in creating good bacteria in the stomach and intestines, but no one until now observed its action on adenomas.  It is believed that the probiotics found in yogurt could be a key factor in lowering the risk of colon cancer by diminishing the inflammation and by counteracting specific cancer-causing agents in the colon. People are advised to add vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and low-fat yogurt to their diet and avoid as much as possible alcohol and processed red meat if they want to have a healthy life.
