The American people, like all Americans, are addicted to tea. But tea is not just any beverage. Quite apart from its intoxicating aroma, tea can help you lose weight. Although tea doesn’t burn calories, it does make you feel full. Tea also has several other advantages. It helps lower blood cholesterol and blood pressure and reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Tea has a reputation among health-conscious people for being healthy, but there are so many different types. It can be hard to know which one to choose. There are dozens of kinds of tea. Most are green, but there are also black, white, oolong, herbal, and fruit teas. They all taste different. To help you decide which ones to try, here are some characteristic flavors.

Green tea.

The flavor of green tea is intense, but mild. It’s smooth, without bitterness. When people think of green tea, they usually think of green tea ice cream. Green tea, in particular, is prized for its weight loss potential. The active ingredient in green tea, called EGCG, increases your body’s fat-burning potential.

Black tea.

Black tea is only slightly bitter, with just a hint of fruitiness. It has a stronger flavor than green tea. When brewed, black tea has a reddish-brown color, but it is less astringent than green tea.

White tea. White tea is the least processed of all teas. The leaves are left folded, rather than rolled. The tea is milder than green tea, sweeter and with a delicate floral flavor.

Oolong tea.

Oolong tea is somewhere between green tea and black tea. People usually describe it as “semi-fermented,” but technically, it isn’t fermented at all. The flavor of oolong tea is nutty and buttery, with a slightly floral aroma.

Herbal tea.

Herbal tea has a mild flavor, usually with no aroma.
