The Loblaw Companies Limited is pulling out their famous chicken nuggets brand Presidents Choice, the Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets due to salmonella contamination.

According to Health Canada, consumers should abstain from further consuming this brand until further notice. The exact name and info of the product are: President’s Choice Pub Recipe Chicken Nuggets-Uncooked Breaded Cutlettes (800 g).

If you have already consumed this brand of chicken nuggets recently and you feel sick, then you should let your doctor know.

Why is Salmonella dangerous?

Even though it is difficult to detect Salmonella by consumers since it does not make the product smelly or it does not change its appearance, the bacterium is dangerous. Pregnant women, children and elderly have to be cautious because since their immune system is weaker they are more likely to contract serious infections. For a normal, healthy adult an infection with salmonella could attract symptoms such as fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea. However, these symptoms will be for them short-termed and they will get better on their own.

How was the contamination discovered?

The recall of the products as well as the discovery of the contamination was thanks to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). The health organization is currently conducting a food safety investigation and this may result in other products being recalled, if any contamination is discovered. The purpose of these kinds of investigations is to prevent the general population from getting infected and from food borne illness outbreaks.

How can you protect yourself?

It is always important to follow the Food Recall warning given by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Also, it is important when cooking to be clean, organized and avoid cross-contamination. For example use a chopping board especially just for vegetables, one for meat and poultry and another one for fruits.
