Oat milk is a plant-based alternative to dairy, made from ground oats and water. It’s low in saturated fat and high in fibre, making it a great choice for those following a vegan or dairy-free diet.

Oats have been used as a food source since ancient times, and their health benefits are well-documented. They’re rich in fiber and other nutrients, but they don’t contain much protein or fat.

1. Oat milk has more protein than other plant-based milks. It has about 5 grams per cup, while almond and soy milks have 1 gram or less. The higher protein content makes oat milk an excellent source of essential amino acids, which are building blocks for proteins in our bodies.

2. Oat milk is a good source of calcium and iron, making it a plant-based alternative for people who can’t eat dairy products like yogurt or cheese. One cup of plain oat milk contains about 30 milligrams (mg) of calcium and 150 mg of potassium — both minerals that are important for your body’s health. Iron helps transport oxygen throughout the body and plays a role in energy production and metabolism.

3. Oats contain beta glucans, which help lower cholesterol levels by blocking cholesterol absorption from food in your intestines before it reaches your bloodstream.

4. Because of its high fiber content, oat milk is often recommended for those who are intolerant to lactose and other common allergens found in cow’s milk. Oats have also been shown to lower cholesterol, improve blood sugar levels and reduce inflammation in the body.

5. Oats are known for their antioxidant properties, which may reduce inflammation throughout the body — including your digestive tract. This may help prevent some gastrointestinal disorders like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

6. In addition to being low in calories and fat, oat milk contains high amounts of vitamins A, B6 and E, along with magnesium, potassium and iron.
