Statistics show that during their lifetimes, 13 percent of men will receive an ADHD diagnosis. Even weirder, the average age of those suffering from the condition is very low: only seven years old. Although it’s often neglected, ADHD (Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a serious issue that can affect the social life of patients very much.

According to the BBC, the ladies could have to wait even decades for receiving an ADHD diagnosis due to gender bias.

To have an idea about how awful ADHD can be, here’s what a patient declared, as quoted by the BBC:

I studied history at university and could write an essay on an academic subject – but when I worked as a sales assistant, I couldn’t fill out an order form,

My mind would wander off and I would make mistakes.

I would get a lot of criticism for that.

I was always thinking, ‘Why am I not able to manage things that other people can do so easily – like keep their house tidy or remember deadlines?’

Here’s what the same person says, as also quoted by the BBC:

I used to tell doctors and therapists all the time, ‘You’ve got to make this constant noise in my head stop. I can’t think. I can’t sleep. I can’t get any peace,’ but this was always dismissed as anxiety or women’s problems.

According to Healthline.com, men are three times more likely than women to get diagnosed with the aforementioned mental health condition. The same source tells us that those suffering from ADHD can’t easily focus on a single task.

It’s also worth remembering that ADHD is classified as a severe mental illness that’s even associated with a high comorbidity rate and also major impairment.
