Europe has already started to roll out a COVID-19 vaccine, and it’s only a matter of time until countries from all over the world will do the same. The COVID-19 pandemic doesn’t seem to spare anyone, as it infected until now almost 69 million people and killed over 1.5 million of them.
The UAE adds itself to the short list of countries that approved a COVID-19 vaccine. Therefore, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (Mohap) announced the registration of the Beijing Institute of Biological Product’s vaccine for the pandemic disease.
86 percent efficacy against COVID-19
The Chinese vaccine is 86 percent effective against the disease that made a whole planet tremble in fear. The delightful conclusion comes after both Mohap and the Department of Health Abu Dhabi (DOH) have reviewed the interim analysis made by Sinopharm CNBG for the phase III trials of the vaccine.
But the great news is far from over, as the analysis also reveals that the Chinese vaccine for COVID-19 has 99 percent seroconversion rate for neutralizing antibody and 100 percent effectiveness when it comes to prevent moderate and severe cases of COVID-19. There’s no use for serious safety concerns, either.
Over 31,000 volunteers in the clinical trials
Each of the 31,000 volunteers from over 120 nationalities was given two shots of the COVID-19 vaccine, with a gap of 21 days between the doses. The trials are managed by Abu-Dhabi based G42 Healthcare in partnership with the ministry, the Abu Dhabi Health Services Company (Seha) and the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH).
In the UAE, a total of over 180,000 people had been infected by the coronavirus, and only 598 of them died. The situation looks better than in many other countries, but there’s an average number of over 1,000 infections every day in the UAE since October.
