Everybody knows that consuming onions is a good idea for almost every diet, but even so, these highly popular vegetables can be harmful to our health sometimes. A mysterious salmonella outbreak keeps spreading, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) blames it on whole onions, as a new article from Yahoo! Movies reveals.
The salmonella outbreak in question could even be far from over, unfortunately. As of October 18, the CDC claims that 652 people across 37 states were infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Oranienburg.
We must avoid some yellow, red, and white onions
In the middle of September, when the salmonella outbreak was first identified, no food was initially associated with the spread.
The CDC also tells us to avoid eating affected onions such as those of yellow, red, and white colors that were imported from Chihuahua (Mexico) and distributed by ProSource Inc.
The CDC declared, as quoted by ca.movies.yahoo.com:
ProSource Inc. indicated onions were last imported on August 27, but these imported onions can last up to three months in storage and may still be in homes and businesses,
Investigators are working to determine if other onions and suppliers are linked to this outbreak.
As cited by the same source, the government agency said:
Throw away any whole red, white, or yellow onions you have at home that do not have a sticker or packaging,
If you can’t tell where the onions are from, don’t buy or eat them.
Otherwise, onions, in general, are well-known for some amazing benefits for our health, as Healthline.com tells us. These vegetables could boost bone density, they’re loaded with antioxidants, they contain cancer-fighting compounds, they possess antibacterial properties, they could benefit heart health, and more.
