In Wisconsin, the Department of Health Services (DHS), the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) along with other 4 Local Health Departments have been investigating cases of people affected by salmonella. There are at least 7 cases of people that consumed fresh shelled peas in 4 counties form Wisconsin and got salmonella.

The people consumed fresh shelled peas which they bought at farmers markets in Green Bay, Madison and Fond du Lac on 22 July. The public has been advised to dispose of all their loose peas that they have bought between 19 July and 5 August, even though they have frozen them in the meantime. If they bought shelled peas or from other markets, they are safe to consume them, as the ones that are suspected have been removed from the markets.

Recommendations for Avoiding Getting Salmonella

To avoid infection with Salmonella, people should follow some useful tips in order to protect themselves and their families. Even though you grow your own vegetables and fruit, you should still go through all these steps.

They must thoroughly wash fruits and vegetables, store them in clean fridges at a low temperature, and refrigerate every product which has been cut or peeled. If they have symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea, they must not cook food for other people. It is recommended that they have to report to the local health department when they have suspicions on food poisoning.

Salmonella is easily spread from contaminated products or water or by having contact with feces from animals or people who are infected with the bacteria. Infected people experience abdominal pains, diarrhea, fever, and vomiting and can last several days.

The infection goes away by itself, patients having to consume more fluids to avoid dehydration which is caused by vomiting and diarrhea. Nonetheless, if you experience any similar symptoms, contact your physician.
