It’s been just revealed that experts found the very first drug that actually has been clinically proven to reduce death rates in patients who have severe forms of COVID-19.
“Giving low doses of the generic steroid drug dexamethasone to patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19 reduced death rates by around a third among those with the most severe cases of infection,” Reuters reported.
A major breakthrough
The agency continued and explained that “The results, described as a ‘major breakthrough’ by scientists leading the UK-led clinical trial known as RECOVERY, suggest the drug should immediately become standard care in patients treated in hospital with the pandemic disease.”
Peter Horby, Professor of Emerging Infectious Diseases in the Nuffield Department of Medicine, University of Oxford is also one of the chief investigators for the trial.
He just said: “Dexamethasone is the first drug to be shown to improve survival in COVID-19.”
The result is welcome
He explained that the result is more than welcome after all this struggling and all the lives that have been lost in the face of this terrible virus.
He also made sure to highlight the fact that the survival benefit is pretty massive and it’s more obvious for people who are sick enough to need oxygen treatment.
He concluded by saying that “dexamethasone should now become standard of care in these patients. Dexamethasone is inexpensive, on the shelf, and can be used immediately to save lives worldwide.”

It’s been recently revealed that an enzyme could protect the lungs. It seems that the ACE2 is more than just an entryway for infection and experts are saying that the enzyme could be pointing the way to a much-needed treatment for COVID-19.
