Health Officials Are Concerned About a Possible Polio Outbreak

Just a few days ago, we shared the news about the polio virus (or poliomyelitis) being identified in a suburb of New York City. As a result, officials urged residents to make sure that they’ve been vaccinated against the potentially life-threatening disease.

To make matters worse, we found out back in late June about the polio virus making a return to the UK after almost four long decades.

A new report from the TODAY publication reveals the latest concerns of health experts regarding polio. They fear that there may be hundreds of people already infected with the virus in the US. A 20-year-old man from Rockland County (New York State) who wasn’t vaccinated for polio tested positive.

Dr. John Torres, a senior medical correspondent, explains that once polio gets into a person’s body, it can lead to fever, flu-like symptoms, body aches, etc. For some people, even paralysis occurs, he adds.

The description of the video is the following:

After a New York man contracted polio last month, health officials are now sounding the alarm of a potential outbreak of the long-eradicated disease.

We all need to keep in mind that the polio virus can act in a very cunning way. About 70 out of 100 people who become infected won’t even deal with any apparent symptoms. It can be very tempting to consider that you are only dealing with flu once polio starts to manifest symptoms. The flu-like symptoms are headaches, fever, sore throat, nausea, stomach pain, and tiredness.

Therefore, it can be crucial to get tested for polio once you start dealing with a fever or fatigue. To make matters worse, polio is also considered a highly contagious virus.
