Pretty much everyone enjoys a cup of coffee in the morning to start the day energized, but this behaviour can actually be very dangerous if we surpass a precise dose. We’re all aware of some of the health risks that too much caffeine can put us through: digestive issues, high blood pressure, insomnia, and more.
According to a new article posted on BestLifeOnline.com, that list enlarges with another condition, perhaps the most dangerous of all: going blind. Drinking too much coffee can increase the risk of vision loss, according to a new study made by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and published in the June 2021 issue of the journal Opthalmology.
Three to four cups of coffee per day increases the risk of glaucoma
Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in the US. The risk of glaucoma increases in the case of those who drink too much coffee per day. While elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a risk factor for glaucoma, the study found that those who have a high genetic predisposition for IOP who also drink about three cups of coffee each day are 3.9 times more likely to deal with glaucoma.
It’s a good idea that those with a strong family history of glaucoma should reduce their caffeine consumption. Anthony Khawaja, MD, PhD, and associate professor of ophthalmology from the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London, declared:
This study suggested that those with the highest genetic risk for glaucoma may benefit from moderating their caffeine intake,
It should be noted that the link between caffeine and glaucoma risk was only seen with a large amount of caffeine and in those with the highest genetic risk.
Of course, coffee can give you the right amount of energy you need for a day, but consuming it wisely has to be an absolute priority.
