Recently, seven people received a hepatitis A diagnosis after they had eaten frozen pomegranate from the Coles supermarkets. The NSW Health was thus prompted to warn people who bought the product to get rid of it instantly.

A Real Danger?

Vicky Sheppeard is the director of communicable diseases for the NSW Health. According to her, she was working together with the Food Authority to locate the source of the infection. The facts show that each of the persons who were affected had eaten the product.

Entyce Food Ingredients is the company that distributes the frozen pomegranate. According to them, it was just an ‘exercising abundant caution’ the recalling of the ‘small batch’ of 180 gram packets. The specialty is called Creative Gourmet Frozen Pomegranate, and it is available only through Coles supermarkets.

A Worrying Fact

What’s even more worrying is the fact this isn’t the first time the products of this company were linked to hepatitis A. Back in February 2015 and June 2017, there was another batch that was recalled. Then, it was about the Creative Gourmet mixed berries, which had also triggered some separate cases of hepatitis A.

What Symptoms Are There?

Those who were infested reported similar symptoms, such as vomiting, nausea, yellow skin, fever, pale stools, and dark urine. It takes 15 to 50 days for them to appear. The cause is a virus that spreads easily in contaminated food or in cases of poor hygiene. According to Dr. Sheppeard, people who had eaten the frozen pomegranate in the recent two weeks may benefit of a vaccination, if they were not protected.

Entyce Food declared that the health and well-being of their customers are a priority for them. However, Dr. Kerry Chant, from the NSW, declared that it’s necessary to emit a health warning against the fruit. As such, be wary of the fruits you buy and avoid this product until things clear up.
