Amidst the battle against the novel coronavirus in which experts from all over the world have been working together to find treatments and vaccines, bad news hits.
It’s been revealed by Dr. Anthonhy Fauci that he would settle for a vaccine that’s 70%-75% effective, but this will turn out to be incomplete protection – why? Well, the reason is the fact that a lot of Americans will not be getting the vaccine, according to the latest reports coming from CNN.
The U.S. will not achieve enough immunity
This spells trouble – the U.S. will not achieve enough levels of immunity to kill the outbreak.
CNN also revealed that with government support, there are three coronavirus vaccines that are expected to be studied in large-scale clinical trials in the next three months.
“The best we’ve ever done is measles, which is 97 to 98 percent effective,” according to Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
He continued and explained: “That would be wonderful if we get there. I don’t think we will. I would settle for [a] 70, 75% effective vaccine.”
It’s been also revealed that a CNN poll from the past month showed that one-third of Americans said that they would not get vaccinated against the COVID-19 even if the vaccine will be cheap.
Herd immunity is crucial
It’s also important to note that herd immunity can be achieved when a sufficient proportion of a population becomes immune to an infectious disease.
Fauci also highlighted that “there is a general anti-science, anti-authority, anti-vaccine feeling among some people in this country — an alarmingly large percentage of people, relatively speaking.”
Anyway, don’t freak out just yet, because there’s also good news about the coronavirus out there – it’s been recently revealed that the danger of coronavirus could pass soon, according to the latest reports, even without vaccines.
An Italian infectious disease expert believes that the virus is becoming less and less dangerous, and it could eventually disappear without a vaccine, on its own.
