Coughing Could Indicate That the Patient’s Lungs are Healing After COVID Infection

In severe cases of COVID-19, the virus can cause inflammation and damage to the respiratory system, leading to respiratory failure and other serious complications. The virus can cause the airways to become narrowed or blocked, making it difficult to breathe, and it can also cause fluid to build up in the lungs, leading to a condition called pneumonia.

In addition, the virus can also cause other complications that can affect the lungs, such as acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which is a severe, life-threatening condition that occurs when the lungs are unable to provide enough oxygen to the body’s tissues. COVID-19 can also weaken the immune system.

Lingering cough could indicate recovery of the lungs

Yahoo Life now reveals that a person experiencing a lingering cough could mean that the lungs are approaching recovery after infection with the coronavirus.

Luci Leykum, MD, who’s the director of primary care services at Harbor Health, reveals that cough represents a common symptom that people face after they come down with COVID.

She explains as Yahoo Life quotes:

Up to five percent of people have a lingering cough after COVID, usually lasting up to four weeks, though fewer than half of those people have a cough that lasts beyond four weeks,

If it lasts longer than that, it could be related to long COVID, particularly if it is associated with other symptoms of long COVID such as brain fog, fatigue, or shortness of breath.

Cough is a symptom that shows up after COVID-19, and it may persist for an extended period of time after the initial infection. According to Dr. Leykum, this symptom typically goes away within four weeks, but it can also last for up to six months, according to the American Lung Association. It is important for individuals with COVID-19 to monitor their symptoms and seek medical attention if they experience any concerning or persistent symptoms.
