Snoring is a common problem. According to statistics, about 25% of men and 15% of women snore, and these rates are increasing with age and reach 60% in men and 40% in women between the ages of 41 and 65. Snoring, by itself, does not constitute a disease, but it can be the first manifestation of a respiratory disorder during sleep known as apnea or even of a cardiovascular condition.

According to experts, there are two questions a person who snores has to answer:

  • Have you been told if you stop breathing for a few seconds while you sleep?
  • Do you sleep during the day very quickly and in situations in which you should not fall asleep?

If the answer is yes to either of these two questions, there is a possibility that you suffer from apnea syndrome. While apnea in its early stages is not harmful, when untreated, it can lead to heart disease and chronic fatigue, among other issues.

If you’re often snoring, you might suffer from apnea

This illness, known as apnea, is caused by the obstruction of the airways during sleep when the musculature of the mouth and throat relax physiologically. That impedes the passage of air to the lungs, which causes oxygenation falls and transient awakenings that fragment sleep and prevents proper rest, experts agree.

That is why people who suffer from apnea wake up with the feeling of not having rested enough and have excessive drowsiness during the day. Also, this disorder is associated with various cardiovascular diseases.

Not everyone who snores has apnea, but almost everyone who has apnea snores, so you should consult your doctor if your snoring episodes are accompanied by an affirmative answer to any of the above questions. It is essential to treat apnea because it might lead to hypertension, fatigue, and more severe cardiovascular conditions, as well.
