6 (Brief) Pieces Of Advice For Avoiding A Hangover

Even the most seasoned party-goers will occasionally find themselves with a pounding headache, dry mouth and nausea the morning after. It’s a sign that you’re a popular person, but it’s not much fun.

But there is good news: Hangovers are pretty straightforward to avoid, and they’re even easier to treat. Here’s how it works.

1. Get some rest.

If you’re able, take a nap or even just go to bed earlier than usual.

2. Drink plenty of water — but not too much.

Alcohol is a diuretic, which means it makes you pee more often and can cause dehydration. But drinking too much water can also be dangerous, so don’t overdo it.

3. Eat a good breakfast (or lunch or dinner).

Breaking the fast after a night of drinking is important — it helps raise low blood sugar levels and replenish your body’s electrolytes (sodium, potassium and magnesium). Stick to something that’s nutritious but easy on the stomach — think eggs, bananas or toast — instead of greasy foods like bacon or sausage, which are harder to digest.

4. Consume electrolytes.

Electrolyte-replenishing drinks like Gatorade and Powerade can help restore some of the nutrients you lose from drinking alcohol. If you don’t have one of these beverages handy, coconut water is another option that’s been shown to help with hangovers because it contains high amounts of potassium, an electrolyte that your body depletes when you drink.

5. Pick your poison carefully

Dark liquors contain chemicals called congeners that are thought to contribute to hangovers more than clear spirits like vodka or gin do. (Tequila has been shown to have few congeners.) Bourbon and red wine contain the most congeners; clear liquors and white wine have fewer.

6. Don’t drink on an empty stomach.

Food helps absorb alcohol in the stomach, slowing its absorption into your bloodstream. It’s best if it’s high in fat and protein — think cheese or nuts — because those stay in your stomach longer than carbs like crackers.
