The number of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease in the United States has increased from 874,613 in 2019 to 928,741 in 2020, surpassing the previous record of 910,000 in 2003. Causes and symptomatology

Blood lipids in modern medicine are divided into three categories: low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and triglyceride. LDL is responsible for carrying cholesterol from the liver to different tissues through the bloodstream, while HDL transports cholesterol back to the liver from the bloodstream. When the levels of LDL and triglycerides become elevated, it can cause the inner walls of blood vessels to accumulate excessive cholesterol, leading to hardening or blockage of the vessels. This can increase the risk of stroke, sudden death, or heart attack.

Chen has mentioned that many people develop cardiovascular diseases due to unhealthy lifestyles, such as excessive consumption of fried foods, offal, sweets, and high-sodium foods. Obesity is also a leading cause of cardiovascular disease. For every kilogram gained from one’s standard weight, the heart requires an additional two kilometers of blood vessels to supply the body with oxygen and nutrients, which can put extra strain on the heart. Genetic factors may be responsible for some cases of cardiovascular disease.

If poor blood circulation occurs, it can potentially lead to a stroke. A hardened carotid artery can result in inadequate blood flow to the brain, causing dizziness and blurred vision upon waking up in the morning. It can also affect steering control while driving, increasing the risk of accidents. If blockages occur in the arteries in the limbs, it can cause numbness in the hands and feet, bloating, and chest tightness.

Chen also pointed out that vascular aging can be observed visually. He listed several physical clues, including:

Distinct horizontal wrinkles on the earlobes.
Skin folds or wrinkles resembling the Chinese character 井.
Purple discoloration on the edge of the tongue.
Engorged veins under the tongue.
Bruises dotting the body.
Numbness in the ring or little finger of the left hand.
All of these may be indicators of cardiovascular disease.

Natural symptom relief

In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), energy flows through channels called meridians in the human body. These channels transport fundamental substances like qi and blood that sustain human life. As per Mr. Chen, there are four acupoints that can be pressed to enhance the flow of qi and blood, ultimately improving cardiovascular function. Acupoints are specific points along the meridians that connect internal organs to various parts of the body. By stimulating these points through techniques like acupuncture and massage, diseases related to specific organs can be treated.

For chest tightness, press the Neiguan acupoint located on the inner side of the forearm, about three finger widths above the wrist crease. Taking deep breaths while pressing the acupoint can improve mood and chest discomfort.

If you have poor digestion or abnormal bowel movements, try pressing the Zhigou acupoint located on the backside of your forearm. This acupoint is about four finger widths above your wrist crease, between your ulna and radius bones. By doing so, you may improve your intestinal peristalsis and blood circulation.

For neck stiffness or headaches, try pressing the Hegu acupoint located between your thumb and index finger. This can help clear your head and improve your vision.

Another acupoint you can try is the Danzhong acupoint, which is located between your breasts. Pressing this acupoint may promote smooth breathing.

Chen also shared a breathing technique that can be performed at home:

First, inhale through your nose until you reach your limit.
Exhale slowly through your mouth until you cannot exhale any further.
Repeat the process.
