As you age, your metabolism slows down, which can make it harder to lose weight. But you can reset your metabolism and help your body burn fat more efficiently.

  • Eat a healthy diet: Eat lots of fruits and vegetables every day, along with lean proteins, whole grains and healthy fats. This diet will help you feel full longer, which will keep your calorie intake in check and help prevent overeating.
  • Hydrate with water instead of soda or sugary drinks: Drinking plenty of water throughout the day helps flush out toxins from your system and keeps hunger pangs at bay between meals by keeping you hydrated so you don’t become thirsty between meals
  • Eat more fiber-rich foods. Fiber helps keep you feeling full longer after meals and helps prevent overeating by slowing down digestion so you feel satisfied longer after meals. Fiber also helps promote healthy bowel movements and keeps blood sugar levels stable throughout the day so you don’t get hungry as often between meals.
  • Exercise regularly: Exercise helps boost your metabolism by increasing muscle mass and creating an increased demand for calories. It also helps improve insulin sensitivity (which helps keep blood sugar levels steady). For best results, aim for 30 minutes of physical activity on most days of the week.
  • Get enough sleep: Getting enough sleep is one of the easiest ways to reset your metabolism. When you’re asleep, your body releases hormones that help build muscle mass and burn fat. The amount of sleep you need varies from person to person; however, most experts recommend seven or eight hours per night for adults between the ages of 18 and 65. If you’re having trouble getting your recommended amount of shut-eye, consider taking steps like turning off all electronic devices an hour before bedtime or avoiding alcohol near bedtime (which can interfere with sleep).
