Recent research indicates that obesity causes infertility. In many studies, conducted in several countries affected by a high obesity incidence, it has been shown that there is a direct link between obesity and infertility as the obesity exposes women to Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS).

The two main reasons why women may have fertility problems are obesity and PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome)

Obesity and polycystic ovary syndrome have a close relationship. PCOS is more common in women with obesity as many studies revealed. Accordingly, between 30% and 60% of women at reproductive age suffering from obesity also present the polycystic ovary syndrome.

According to the experts, the higher the body mass index of a woman, the more likely it is for her to suffer from PCOS.

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome symptoms

These are the symptoms that a woman with PCOS presents:

  • Irregular menstrual cycles;
  • Abundant bleeding during menstrual cycles or complete absence of menstrual cycles;
  • Lack of ovulation;
  • Pelvic pain;
  • Excess hair on the body (face, abdomen, chest);
  • Weight gain for no apparent reason;

Obesity may cause infertility in women

This syndrome is not exclusive to the overweight and obese patient but it is important to diagnose this problem in time because it is very common in women of reproductive age who suffer from obesity.

In obese patients, hormonal alteration and insulin resistance are two important factors that favor the development of cysts in the ovaries and, consequently, problems to conceive, recent researches in this field revealed.

To control severe obesity, the doctors recommend bariatric surgery, which is a relatively simple procedure but which must be followed up after the surgery by occasional medical consultations and a diet poor in fats.

On the other hand, in cases of mild obesity, doctors recommend nutritionists consultations and weight loss diet combined with organized physical activity.

Up to 60% of women with obesity will develop polycystic ovary syndrome, which can affect their fertility significantly, therefore, doctors concluded that obesity may cause infertility in women but this can be avoided by losing weight.
