In a new study, researchers at the University of California, Irvine, in the United States, discovered that fasting is positively impacting on the circadian cycle of the liver and skeletal muscles, boosting the metabolism which might eventually lead to better health. Accordingly, the scientists revealed that fasting might protect against age-related diseases.
According to the study’s report published recently in the Cell Reports journal, the circadian cycle is a crucial process within the human body and also at organs level, which preserve homeostasis in the relationship with environmental changes. While scientists already knew how the food influences circadian cycles at the level of the peripheral tissues, they did not realize how fasting affects the metabolism, until now.
“We discovered fasting influences the circadian clock and fasting-driven cellular responses, which together work to achieve fasting-specific temporal gene regulation. Skeletal muscle, for example, appears to be twice as responsive to fasting as the liver,” explained Paolo Sassone-Corsi, a professor of Biological Chemistry at UCI’s School of Medicine.
Fasting Might Protect Against Age-Related Diseases
“The reorganization of gene regulation by fasting could prime the genome to a more permissive state to anticipate upcoming food intake and thereby drive a new rhythmic cycle of gene expression. In other words, fasting is able to reprogram a variety of cellular responses essentially. Therefore, optimal fasting in a timed manner would be strategic to affect cellular functions positively and ultimately benefiting health and protecting against aging-associated diseases,” added Sassone-Corsi.
In the meantime, scientists of the Insilico Medicine released a companion study of the one carried out by Sassone-Corsi and his colleagues. The Insilico medicine researchers focused on how smoking affects smokers, depending on their age. The research revealed that smokers, both men and women, presented a higher aging ratio so that they are twice as old as their chronological age.
“I am pleased to be part of the research study, which provides fascinating scientific evidence that smoking is likely to accelerate aging. Smoking is a real problem that destroys people’s health, causes premature deaths, and is often the cause of many serious diseases. We applied artificial intelligence to prove that smoking significantly increases your biological age,” concluded Polina Mamoshina from the Insilico Medicine.
