A recent research carried out by researchers from the University of Toronto, in Canada, and published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology, has demonstrated that the usually consumed dietary supplements containing vitamins and minerals are neither significantly beneficial for health nor harmful.

More specifically, the clinical trials showed that the dietary supplements with multivitamins, calcium, vitamin C, and vitamin D had no additional health benefits or side effects, thus such products can’t prevent cardiovascular disease, heart attack, stroke, or premature death.

“We were surprised to find so few positive effects of the most common supplements people consume. The review found that if you want to use multivitamins, vitamin D, calcium or vitamin C, this is not harmful but there are no apparent advantages either,” explained Dr. David Jenkins, the study’s leading author.

A balanced and healthy diet makes the difference and not the dietary supplements

Nonetheless, the investigation has uncovered that the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke might be decreased only by the use of both B vitamins complex and folic acid.

On the other hand, the antioxidants found in dietary supplements and the niacin (vitamin B3) exhibited only a very slight impact, which, on the contrary, might even heighten the risks of death by any causes, including heart attack and stroke.

“It’s more beneficial to rely on a healthy diet to fill you up with vitamins and minerals. So far, no dietary supplements research has shown us anything better than healthy servings of less processed plant foods, including vegetables, fruits, and nuts,” Dr. David Jenkins concluded.

This study comes at the right time to shed more light on this topic as we live in a period when more and more people rely on dietary supplements rich in vitamins and minerals, as well as in other substances believed to be healthy, and even substitute a balanced and healthy diet with these products.
