Harold, a griffon vulture that was believed to be a male for the last 25 years stunned the wildlife sanctuary’s staff members that found ‘him’ laying an egg.

Eagle Heights, a sanctuary in Kent, the UK, is a non-profit organization considered to be the largest UK sanctuary for birds of prey. Besides, Eagle Height is also offering sanctuary for servals, reptiles, Meerkats, huskies, and other birds.

However, the staff was stunned when one of the organization’s most valuable asset, a griffon vulture that was considered to be a male was found laying an egg, last Thursday.

Now, the leaders of Eagle Heights are fighting to bring in a male partner for the vulture as the griffon vultures are on the brink of extinction.

How a male vulture came out to be a female?

Director of the sanctuary, Mr. Ames, explains how such a big confusion was possible. As he said, the sex of griffon vultures is really hard to be observed with the naked eye or by other simple methods, so DNA testing is needed to depict the sex. Harold has done the test when it was a chick and the sex test result was ‘Male’. However, Mr. Ames explains that such DNA testing is only 80% accurate and that’s why such a big confusion lasted for 25 years.

What will happen with Harold the griffon vulture next?

As I’ve already mentioned above, the staff members at Eagle Heights sanctuary will do their best to find a male suitor for Harold. This is an important step to try bringing the griffon vultures species back on the right track as it is now close to extinction.

Harold, which is one of the most loved animals at the sanctuary, will soon face another problem. As it has come out it is a female, the name Harold is not suitable anymore for a female griffon vulture, so the Eagle Heights personnel still debates on a new name.
